Pillow Thoughts IVCourtney Peppernell's Pillow Thoughts Series is a collection of poetry, a lot of which deal with love and loss, but that are divided by themes that you can read based on what you need to hear. For example, one of the themes in this collection is "If your soul needs empowering," and I have to say that this was one of my favorites. Peppernell has a way of making you feel seen and encourages you to continue living the life you want. Throughout the book she reminds the reader that they are not alone, and that we are a part of her. I find that comforting, especially in times like these. The Pillow Thoughts Series is one that you can always go back to when you need to hear/feel/be something. If you need one of those collections that you can read in your own pace to reflect on, I suggest picking up one of these books. You can find them on the links below. Pillow Thoughts IV is released on August 4, 2020: Amazon Barnes and Noble

A Field Guide to a Happy Life:53 Brief Lessons for LivingWhen I originally picked this book to read, I didn't know what to expect, but A Field Guide to a Happy Life: 53 Brief Lessons for Living did end up teaching me some new concepts I didn't know about. The main thing you should know about this book- if you haven't already done some research on it- is that it is about Stoicism. Stoicism is a philosophy that is based on living a virtuous life as well as valuing wisdom. Although this book does mention that you can learn about Stoicism without prior knowledge, I did feel overwhelmed at times because of my ignorance on the topic. I was able to pick some things up regarding Stoic thought, this was done through examples, but there were times where I felt I was inundated with information, so I did not get a full grasp on the subject. My suggestion is that if you are looking to learn more about Stoicism, that you also do some research before to get your feet wet, and then read this book in pieces so that you have plenty of time to reflect on the subject. Amazon Barnes and Noble Powell's Skeletina and the In-Between WorldSkeletina & the In-Between World is a beautifully illustrated board book about the world between life and death. It introduces young readers to some people who live in the world like Skeletina, and her role within that space. This is a great addition to have in any collection, especially to use around the time of The Day of the Dead (November 1-2). Although Skeletina's world may look a little spooky for some of the younger readers, this is a kid friendly book. I do think this book is diverse, and if you pair it with other Skeletitos books you'd be able to see more of the legend and culture within them. Jarka is an apprentice to the Wysman, an advisor to the king, and his talent runs deep within him. Although he has so many challenges against him, Jarka is loyal to those he cares about and does his best to learn from all of his experiences as they come. When his town is plagued with fear and stolen children Jarka feels responsible in helping solve this mystery, and matters take a serious turn when someone he loves is affected by this monster. “The Wysman” is a book filled with magic, mystery, and fantasy, so readers of all kinds will be able to find this book enjoyable. One of the things that I found so refreshing is that our main character has a disability that makes him question some of his capabilities at times, but it doesn’t take away from who he is or his goals- this is empowering; we are right there with Jarka as he works on finding his space within a larger world. With this in mind, I do want to say that I feel this book has a lot of potential because I did feel compelled to continue with Jarka on his journey, but there were times (especially in the beginning) where I felt like I was given a lot of information to process all at once. I was stepping into a new world, but I also felt as if I should already know some of the places and people within the story. I do look forward to seeing more from Dorothy Winsor as well as Jarka, so keep an eye out for more to come! Our main character Camille Preaker is a struggling journalist who has just been given a story that takes her back to her hometown where two little girls have been stolen, murdered, and left without teeth. Camille must track down a lead for the story while also being made to stay in her toxic childhood home with her estranged mother, absent stepfather, and bratty step-sister. Things start to take a drastic turn when Camille realizes that the prime suspect may not be the actual murderer at all. Flynn's novel was one filled with so many twists and turns that made me want to finish the book as quickly as I could to figure out who the killer was. Now that I have finished the novel, I do plan on watching the TV show version to see it all come to life.
